Many of the most serious and deadly cancers develop quickly and without symptoms, and some lack a recommended screening test. That’s where the Galleri screening test comes in. With this unique test, we can screen for over 50 types of cancer, including uterine and cervical cancer.

At our New York City office, we are proud to offer the Galleri test to help our patients receive more information about their health and, if necessary, start cancer treatment as quickly as possible.

What is Galleri?

Galleri is the first multi-cancer early-detection test. With this simple test, we can look for 50+ different types of cancer. While it does not diagnose cancer, it can be a highly effective tool in early detection and ensuring you receive the care you need as soon as possible. Further testing will be needed to discover the exact type of cancer and how far it has progressed, but Galleri can be a simple way to get you to the next steps of diagnosis.

How does it work? The Galleri test screens for the unique signal found in the DNA fragments that are shed from cancer cells. When cells complete their life cycle and die, tiny parts of their DNA enter the bloodstream. These tiny fragments are called cell-free DNA. The Galleri test screens a sample of these cell-free DNA fragments and tells us whether they come from healthy cells or cancer cells.

The cancers it can detect are also known for releasing more DNA fragments into the bloodstream during their early stages. And these DNA fragments look much different than DNA from healthy cells. By screening for these fragments, we can detect cancer before symptoms start to appear.

MEET DR. ALEX TEPPER

Welcome to my practice. Let me introduce myself and my practice philosophy. I am a board certified OB/GYN in practice for over 20 years and have been a solo-practitioner on the Upper East Side of Manhattan since 2000. All deliveries are performed at The Mount Sinai Medical Center where I went to medical school and at Lenox Hill Hospital.

Galleri Procedure

The Galleri test is incredibly straightforward. It simply involves a blood draw, and you don’t need to fast or prepare in any way beforehand. Dr. Tepper or one of our expert team members will simply draw your blood and then we’ll send it off to be tested. That’s it. It typically takes about two weeks before your results are available.

Galleri Results

There are two possible results with the Galleri test: No Cancer Signal Detected and Cancer Signal Detected. If the test detects a cancer signal, your results will also include one or two origins for the cancer signal. It will predict the tissue type or organ the cancer signal may be coming from, allowing Dr. Tepper to know the best next steps in your diagnosis and treatment.

While a false positive is possible, in a recent study done on the Galleri test, the false positive rate was 0.5%. This means if 200 people were tested, only one person may receive a false positive.
